Current Events

Every other week, you will be responsible for turning in one current event. Keep your eyes and ears open for interesting and impacting news. Read the newspaper, watch the news, and listen to the conversations around you. Pay attention. Know what is going on in the world in which you live.

Current events must be from a newspaper or a news magazine. You may use one that is on the Internet, but it has to be the Web version of a publication…not a random item.

The event must be of NATIONAL or WORLD significance. It might be in a history book of the future. Therefore, an article about a cat stuck in a tree would not work.

The article must be from the current week.

This is a homework assignment and must be completed on your own time. It will be due at the beginning of the period. Pay attention to the board for due date reminders.

Current Event Procedure

  1. At the top, right hand corner of your page, you need the following heading:

    Your name and class
Title of article (in quotation marks)
    Source of the article (underlined)
    Date of the article

  2. Write a summary and response to the article. Include your opinion, the connection this had to history, or the implication for the future. This should be from your head! Evidence of thinking is required. Your summary and response will be combined. DO NOT separate them. This is a literature response which requires the summary and response to be intertwined throughout the paper. Please see the example on the back of this page. Attach your article to the response. Include an attention-getting sentence and evidence of reading strategies. ie: I remember when…This reminded me of…I thought…I wonder…Use examples from the text!
  3. Get a rubric from the shelf, and attach it to the front of your current event. Please
write your name on the front of the rubric.
